Commuters who travel across the Hudson River will soon learn whether they will need to dig deeper into their pockets in 2008.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will vote on a proposal to raise tolls and fares at its next board meeting, on Friday. The increases would be the first since 2001 and would come after a public comment period that lasted two months.

One of the best things about living in Hudson County is the proximity of New York City - so close and yet so far.

Or should we say, so close and yet so expensive.

Driving into the city? On top of paying $3 for a gallon of gas and on top of the current $6 toll, you'll soon have to pony up an extra $2 to use a Port Authority bridge or tunnel if a proposed increase goes through.

More than a dozen people braved sleet and snow Thursday night to attend the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's hearing on its proposed toll and PATH fare hikes in the Scott Ring Room at Hudson County Community College.

The Port Authority will hold a public hearing online at 11 a.m. Monday about its proposed toll and fare increases.

The online hearing, the agency's first, will start with a brief presentation about the proposed increases and be followed by an extent period for public comment. Details about participating in the hearing are posted at www.panynj.gov.
