About Councilman Peter Cammarano

Hoboken is a great city. But, for far too many people, it has also become an expensive place to live. Councilman Peter Cammarano is fighting to make life more affordable for his neighbors in Hoboken, throughout Hudson County and all across North Jersey.

The revitalization of Hoboken began when artists, artisans and professionals seeking easy access to New York City realized they could have all the amenities of urban living in one of New Jersey's premier cities, while taking advantage of a relatively low cost of living. This population boom – coupled with a dynamic base of those born and raised in the city – led to Hoboken’s vibrant growth. Now, a generation later, the extraordinary cost of renting or owning, coupled with high property taxes, has made living or running a business in Hoboken exceedingly expensive for many people. Moreover, as residents and businesses leave Hoboken because of that economic reality, the city is also sadly losing some of its diversity and sense of history.

Now, more than ever, Hoboken needs strong leaders committed to making sure the city continues to grow, while maintaining the affordability and charm which made it such an attractive destination in the first place.

Peter Cammarano is standing up to stop the Port Authority’s proposed PATH hike in order to keep this vital rail service affordable for those who use it on a daily basis. In light of global warming, increased traffic on our congested roads and our nation’s dangerous dependence on foreign oil, Councilman Cammarano believes we should be incentivizing public transportation – not punishing those who use the PATH to commute to or visit Hudson County and Manhattan. Peter is also looking out for those who run Hoboken’s restaurants, stores and waterfront businesses.

Since being elected Hoboken City Councilman-at-Large in 2005, Peter Cammarano has fought to create open space, address the need for more parking and build affordable housing. He is keenly focused on making life better for all of Hoboken’s families and is working hard to make the city a more affordable place. Peter successfully led the fight against eminent domain before the City Council, and he sponsored and passed local legislation to make Hoboken a more eco-friendly city. In response to the recent controversy regarding Hoboken’s SWAT team, Councilman Cammarano was the first to call for disbanding the unit, which was dissolved within days.

Peter Cammarano works at the law firm of Genova, Burns & Vernoia, where he practices in the areas of labor and employment law, and election law. Peter has litigated some of New Jersey’s most significant election law cases of the past few years. In 2004, Peter served as Hoboken’s coordinator for the Kerry-Edwards presidential campaign. In 2006, he was the statewide legal coordinator for Bob Menendez’s Senate campaign. This year, Peter is proud to be Hillary Clinton’s top election lawyer in New Jersey for her historic presidential campaign.

Peter previously worked as a law clerk for Superior Court Judge Kevin G. Callahan in Jersey City. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Association of the Federal Bar of the State of New Jersey, as well as the bar associations for Hudson, Bergen and Essex Counties. Peter has also worked as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, teaching legal research to undergraduate and graduate students.

Peter Cammarano was born on July 22, 1977 in Wayne, New Jersey. After graduating with honors from Boston University in 1999, Peter moved to Hoboken while attending Seton Hall Law School. It was there that he met his wife, Marita Erbeck, who was born in Hoboken, the city where they’ve decided to raise their family. Marita’s grandfather was once Hoboken’s City Comptroller. This past Summer, Peter and Marita welcomed a baby girl, Abigail, to their growing family.
